About Lela Garner Walker
Obituary: The Gadsden Daily Times-News Thursday, Jan. 29, 1914 " Smokeneck News: Mrs. T.W. Walker was laid to rest at Pilgrims Rest Monday afternoon. Rev. J.E. Smith conducted the funeral service. Both the Pilgrims Rest and Burns Academy dismissed at noon through respect for the deceased. Her death has caused deep sorrow for all who knew her." ****** comment by compiler of Pilgrims Rest Cemetery book and this information is a revision to book one. Lela was the FIRST wife of Thad W. Walker (he later married Mrs. Cora Manes Foreman [died 1974], widow of Samuel Walter Foreman.) Lela Garner was a daughter of James Spencer "Spence" Garner and Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Wynn Garner. Lela was the mother of Mazie Walker Smith, Gertrude Walker Hall, Ethel Walker Brandon, Minnie Dovie Walker Bates, Roy Walker, Clifford Walker, Willie Webster Walker, Thelma Walker, and relatives say she had two infants to die and census records confirm that fact.
NO TOMBSTONE. A descendant said Lela was buried alongside her brother, Tom C. Garner; therefore, I painted a block and placed it to mark her burial place. Submitted by: ngl - no relation to Mrs. Lela Garner Walker.
My motto: "A heritage should never be forgotten. The resting place of all persons should be marked with a tombstone to honor their memory."

UPDATE OCTOBER 2014: Pilgrims Rest Cemetery placed two "Unmarked Graves" monuments inscribed with names of persons buried somewhere within this cemetery without markers. The monuments are near the flag pole in the middle of the old hill. Handmade blocks will be removed since this inscribed monument has been placed in the cemetery. ___________________________________________* Reference: [https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/73716691/lela-garner-walker Find A Grave Memorial] - [https://www.geni.com/projects/SmartCopy/18783 SmartCopy]: ''Feb 3 2020, 9:22:34 UTC''
