About Lena Charlotte Sandy
Roland Butler's cousin Lena. Larry Butler recalls having heard she was a singer. Later in life she worked as an operator for the phone company. Remember visiting her in 1967-68 in Manhattan, where she was retired, in Stuyvesant Village, a high rise rent controlled apartment tower.
Bob Sandy's Aunt Lena (my Grandfather Robert Hall Sandy's sister) worked for Bell Telephone / Western Electric for over 40 years. She never married. Lena was a very outgoing woman who enjoyed travel and did so extensively through both Eastern and Western Europe as well as Cuba and throughout the USA. I have two of her old passports and marvel at how many places she visited. Lena's passion was opera and she sang on a show produced by RCA at their studios on West 42nd Street on Saturday afternoons. I have many letters she kept from listeners who sent notes to RCA wanted more information about Lena and commenting about how her beautiful soprano voice and how her voice was so clear and words so distinct.
Lena would come visit my Grandfather Robert Hall Sandy (her brother) and his wife in Sinclairville NY (Western NY) and would also come stay with my family on occasion in Eden, New York. In her later years she became ill and moved close by my Grandparents in a retirement home (Gerry NY). She is buried in Charlotte Center cemetery next to my Grandfather and Grandmother.
