Shorty Thompson, 87, of Farmington, passed peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at his home. Shorty was born June 21, 1924, in Garland County, Ark., to Emmit Rae and Emma Thompson. He was raised in Big Springs, Texas. He was known and loved by many. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 2182 and BPOE Lodge No. 1747. In 1957, Shorty moved to Farmington. He was the owner of Thompson Vacuum Truck Service & Well Drilling from 1957 to 2010. Shorty and Ellie McKay Thompson were married April 1, 1977. Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, Emmit and Emma; four brothers, Emmit Jr., Oneal, Glen and Clyde; his first wife, Doris Jean Thompson; and his oldest son, Lonnie Ray. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Ellie; one son, William Eugene and wife, Denise, two grandchildren, Brenton Thompson and Brittany (DJ) Kelling; one great-grandchild, Kaeldra Keeling; six stepchildren, Tom (Jeanie) McKay, Ted (Susie) McKay, Roger McKay, Linda (Butch) Granito, Janie (Sandi) Thompson; and many step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at Cope Memorial Chapel, 404 W. Arrington St. in Farmington, followed by graveside services at Memory Gardens, 6917 E. Main St. in Farmington. There will be a gathering at VFW Post No. 2182 following the services. Arrangements are with Cope Memorial Chapel, 404 W. Arrington St. in Farmington, 505-327-5142.
