Lennie, described by his granddaughter
Lennie & Aubrey (Swazi as we knew him) were great friends. They grew up together on Aubrey's farm. It was Aubrey's father who got Lennie an apprenticeship & so started his racing career. Gramps learned to speak Swazi & 6 other African languages fluently. He was known as "Ma shambeez" by all the black racing folk. My nickname was "little ma shambeez" because we were always together. Lennie was an exceptional horseman. He served his apprenticeship under Major Cooper (British Army) who taught him self discipline that would save his life in years to come. He could ride like he was one with a horse. As good a judge of picking out well proportioned horses which is a skill u r born with. His ability to train a horse to the correct level of fitness was unbelievable. His overall knowledge of Racing was encyclopedic - bloodlines, form, riding, training the whole shebang. Champion Jockey 7 years running although his weight was a problem. Champion Trainer for 4 years. Was the only Jockey to hold Racing Colours - red with white hoops, red cap - while riding. Drank like a fish until the day I was born & never touched a drop there after. Smoked 80 a day which, after visiting the doctor & being told they would kill him gave them up there & then. NEVER gambled. He told me "Keep your money in your pocket & you'll make a profit." 😉😉😉 Loved to laugh & had a wicked sense of humour - could tell the most outrageous tales. Loved by children & animals. Not much of a talker although very sociable. Was a very popular, well respected man. Loved his granddaughter & step granddaughter to equal distraction. Took his daughter-in-law to his heart & never let go. My grandmother was in a completely different category to any other human being in his affections.
