About Ignatius Mattingly, Sr.
- Of all his children, only Ignatius, Jr. remained in Maryland. It was reported that he was dead by 1789 but this is wrong because he appears on the 1790 census.
* Ignatius' will was in 1789, he was the son of Thomas II, son of Thomas I. The 1789 will gave the land to Ignatius; $1.00 or 1 shilling to Leonard, Luke, & William and another or two; balance of estate to Ignatius and Susanna.
Ignatius, the sixth son of Thomas Mattingly II, was not of age at the time of his father's death. Named last in his father's Will, Ignatius was probably the youngest of six sons. After the Will of his father directed the disposition of the real estate and some of the personal estate, the residue was divided equally between the widow, Ignatius, his three brothers (Charles, William, Luke) and his sister Ann.
Ignatius more than likely married his wife Sarah sometime prior to the birth of their first child in 1739.
Records of Ignatius are few. He was paid "for making a coffin" by Philip Key, administrator for William Smith in 1745. A few other payments and debts are also noted in the St. Mary's County court records. Ignatius Mattingly was on the Rent Rolls of St. Mary's County for having a 155-acre tract of land known as "Clever" which he had purchased from James Bond Taylor April 2, 1751. He was also paying taxes on three parcels of land in St. Mary's County from 1754-1774 known as "Clever", "Mattingly's Hope", and "St. John's". Ignatius was also mentioned or a witness in several Wills.
Ignatius must have been seriously ill when he wrote his Will April 2, 1789 since he died shortly thereafter. "One Shilling Sterling" was left to five of his children (Leonard, Luke, William, Elizabeth and Sarah) and the balance of his estate was divided equally between his son, Ignatius Jr., and daughter Suzanna. Since Ignatius' wife, Sarah, was not mentioned in his will she may have predeceased him.
Ignatius' children were among the early immigrants to Kentucky. Ignatius Jr. appears to be the only child that remained in Maryland.
The Norris book on the Family of Thomas Mattingly indicates Ignatius "probably married sometime in the 1720s and had a number of children. He may also have married a lady named Eleanor about 1735 and sired more children. Some genealogists list George, born in 1737, and Zachariah, born about 1738." We have nothing to cooborate these matters and do not include them in our record.
The Find-A-Grave.com record for Basil Mattingly, Ignatius' grandson and the son of "Old" Leonard Mattingly, lists his grandmother's name as Sarah Catherine Mattingly nee Fowler.
