About Leroy Garland Sargent

Leroy Garland Sargent was born in Custer County, Nebraska, and he passed away at this home in Beaumont, California, on December 5, 1987, at the age of 78 years. He was born on September 16, 1909 in Custer County, Nebraska.
He was the second son of Blanche and Arthur Sargent. He lived most of his early days in Walworth, Nebraska and attended grade school there. He was a graduated later from high school in nearby Sargent, Nebraska.
He loved music, and he played the clarinet in the Sargent High School band as well as in the community band. He enjoyed playing comic roles in the high school dramatic presentations too.
In 1933, Mr. Sargent came to Whittier, California, where he worked as an electronic technician. During World War II, he worked at the busy huge Douglas Aircraft plant. He served as radio checkout technician on the B-17 Bombers; the radios were ready for duty when they left his care.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Lee Sargent; by his brothers, Howard and Eugene Sargent and by his sisters, Helen and Doreen.
He leaves his wife of almost 54 years, Opal Sargent; and daughter, Carol Bennett of Northampton, Massachusetts, son, Dennis E. Sargent of Beaumont, California; and six grandchildren, Morgan, Elizabeth and Nell Bennett, Jennifer, Kristen and Lindsey Sargent; and one sister, Margaret Peterson of northern California, and many nieces and nephews also survive.
Mr. Sargent was active in many community affairs, including over 12 years on the South Whittier School Board. He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters, Am Assn. of Retired Persons, and the Cherry Valley Brethren Church.
Burial was made in the Rose Hills Memorial Park at Whittier, California.
