About Lester Hayden Humphrey

Senator L.H. Humphrey died in Albany at 6:00 am after a brief illness, aged 52 years, when pleuro-pneumonia developed with a complication of kidney trouble. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Harriet Gates Humphrey, to whom he was married on 9/1/1898, 3 children, Onlas S. Humphrey, Elizabeth L. and Maude Humphrey and 2 grandsons, Hayden Sill Humphrey and Onias S. Humphrey, Jr.; also by his mother, who is 95 years of age, and 1 brother and 3 sisters, Samuel B. Humphrey of Warsaw; Mrs. Harriet Tozier, widow of the late Hon. O.L. Tosier of Sheldon; Mrs. Electa Baldwin, of Lockport and Mrs. Minnie Kellogg of Carthage, MO. His father died December 14, 1884 at the age of 84 years. Senator Humphrey's 1st wife and the mother of his children, was Miss Maude Wilton Skinner, only child of Judge O.C. Skinner, of Quincy, Ill., to whom he was married May 18, 1875 and who died February 25th, 1897. Born in Sheldon, Wyoming county, Jan. 22, 1850, the youngest child of Lester Hayden and Hannah Blakeley Humphrey. When 16 years of age he removed with his parents to Warsaw which had ever since been his home and where he was honored and esteemed in the highest degree. At the age of 19 years he engaged in the tanning and leather trade which he sold out in 1872 to accept a position in the Wyoming Co. National Bank. On 1/22/1873 was elected vice president of the bank until 1888 was its executive officer. In 1885 became associated with Dr. W.C. Gouinlock in the manufacture of salt at Warsaw & in 1887 they erected a salt plat at Hutchinson, Kansas. In 1888 he resigned from bank of Warsaw. In 1895 he was elected Senator from the 46 district.
