Biography

According to 1850 and 1860 census records Levi Self was born in North Carolina. He had evidently moved to South Carolina by at least 1800. He later moved to Tennessee then to Illinois and on to Newton County, Arkansas. Levi was a veteran of the War of 1812. He served as a private in the East Tennessee Militia. He was drafted October 1814 in Bledsoe County, Tennessee and served until about 25 April 1815.

Levi married 3 times.

  1. First to Sarah Felton. Information in War of 1812 Widow's pension filed by Mary Self indicates Sarah Felton died in 1821. No date of birth was given.
  2. Levi married second to a widow, Elizabeth Thrash and
  3. third to Mary Hodge Boen Douthat on 1 December 1858 in Newton County, Arkansas.

Information per the War of 1812 Widow's pension filed by Mary Self 12 April 1880.

From Vonda Dihm:

My earliest known Self ancestor is Levi Self born in NC ca 1781 and died in Newton Co., AR 28 October 1862 Levi married first to Sarah Felton ca 1799.and is found on the 1800 Pendleton District, SC census. His name appears as Security on the Marriage Bond of Henry Self and Betsey Allen 26 March 1807 in Roane Co., TN In 1814 Levi was living in Bledsoe Co., TN (created from Roane Co. in 1807) and in October 1814 he was drafted to serve in the War of 1812. He served as a private in the East Tennessee Militia in Captain Miles Vernan's Company. He states that he was marched to Mobile, Alabama where he was confined in the hospital for several weeks and in April of 1815 he returned to Bledsoe Co., TN. His name appears on a petition in 1815 in Bledsoe Co., TN. Levi moved to White Co., Illinolis and he is found there on the 1820 census. His first wife died in 1821 and Levi married Elizabeth Thrash (a widow) 21 July 1824. In 1826 he is living in Clay Co., Illinois and it is there that my gggrandmother Mahala Celia Self and her twin brother Levi are born. In 1830 Levi appears on the Shelby Co., Illinois census and by 1840 he has moved to Arkansas. In 1850 Levi is in Newton Co., AR and he filed a claim to obtain Bounty Land based on his military service in the War of 1812. Sometime between 1850 and 1858 his wife Elizabeth died and he married Sarah Hodge Boen Douthit on 1 December 1858. Levi died 28 October 1862 in Newton Co., AR. His widow Sarah applied for and received a pension in 1880.

I have been searching many years for info about the parents and siblings of Levi Self. Speculation is that Levi's father was Spencer John Self (and that Spencer John Self's father was Presley Self) and that Levi had brothers, Eli, Nathan, Hezekiah and Spencer. I have tracked Levi and his supposed brothers and their descendants through Tennessee, Alabama, Illinois, Mississippi and Arkansas but have been unable to prove their relationship to each other or to Spencer John Self. Looking for clues, evidence and proof of that relationship.

The only thing I know for sure about Levi Self's early life is that he was born in 1781 (as per War of 1812 Pension Application) in North Carolina and can be found on the 1800 census in Pendleton District, South Carolina.

On the 1790 census in Montgomery Co., NC are the following:

Spencer Self - 2 males 16 and upward, 5 males under 16 and 3 females

Presley Self - 1 male 16 and upward, 2 males under 16 and 3 females

Isaac Self - 1 male 16 and upward, 1 male under 16 and 4 females

Francis Self - 1 male 16 and upward and 6 females

Between 1790 and 1800 the Montgomery Co., NC Selfs evidently moved to Pendleton District, SC (no Selfs in Montgomery Co., NC in 1800). Also a Vincent Self shown in Anson Co., NC in 1790 moved to Pendleton Dist.

Pendleton Dist. SC 1800

Spencer Self - 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-26, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-26 This Spencer Self is too young to be the Spencer listed in Montgomery Co., NC 1790. Perhaps his son - no proof.

Levi Self - 1 male 16-26, 1 female 16-26 This I am assuming is Levi Self born 1781 - possibly the son of Spencer of 1790 Montgomery Co., NC. Sometime before this census Levi Self married Sarah Felton (as per War of 1812 Pension Application).

John Self 2 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 45+, 2 females under 10, 1 female 45+ Here is where the problems begin. In 1790 in Montgomery Co., NC there was a Spencer Self who had in his household 2 males 16+ and 5 males under 16. No Spencer Self (or any other Self) with anywhere that many males shows up in Pendleton Dist. in 1800. However this John comes close SO someone (Not Me!) decided this must be the Spencer Self from the 1790 Montgomery Co., NC census and he was given the name Spencer John. Someone may have some evidence to support this theory but I have not seen it.

Presley Self - 1 male uner 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26 and one male 26-45, 2 females under 10 1 female 16-26, 2 females 26-45 This Presley was born between 1755 and 1774 and I assume he could be the father of the Spencer listed in 1790 in Montgomery (we know only that Spencer was age 16 and upward in 1790 ) but I doubt it. He is certainly not the father of the John (supposedly Spencer John) listed on this census (age 45 or over) This Presley could be the son of the John Self who is 45+ listed on this census. All the males that were in the household with Presley in 1790 are evidently still with him in 1800. This may be the Presley mentioned below in Bledsoe Co., TN

Frances Self - 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16 and 1 female 26-45. Frances has a male age 10-16 but the Francis in Montgomery Co., NC in 1790 did not have any males listed. Perhaps a son was born in 1790 after the census was taken. This may be the Frances Self shown below in Bledsoe Co., TN beginning as early as 1808.

Vincent Self - 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26-45, 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, 1 female 45+

Baalam Self - 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 female 10-16

All these Selfs scatter between 1800 and 1810. I do not find any of them in South Carolina in 1810. There is no 1810 census for Tennessee (except for Rutherford Co.), Alabama or Georgia.

Tennessee

Spencer Self - Survey for Spencer Self 1808 in Roane Co., TN (Bledsoe was created from Roane Co. in 1807)

Spencer and Presley Self - Land survey 1812 - Francis Self delivered to Presly Self

Presly Self - Bledsoe County Circuit Court, March 1813.

Francis Self - Bledsoe County Circuit Court - March 1817- (My notes just say he was a witness).

Levi Self - October 1814 drafted to serve in the War of 1812 (as per Bounty Land and Pension application.

Petition to delay enaction of the land law during the war between Great Britian and US. Bledsoe Co., TN 1815 Hezekiah Self Jessee Self Levy Self Spencer Self

Francis Self -Bledsoe County, TN - Deed to Francis Self from James McKiny(?) - 1817

If it is true that the Spencer Self in Montgomery Co., NC in 1790 and the John Self in Pendleton District, SC in 1800 are the same person I do not see a Presley Self who could be his father. Also it is possible that Spenser John Self (if Spenser and John are actually the same person) could be the father of Levi, Nathan, Hezekiah and Eli Self but I have not found any documentation to prove that.

Over the years there has been a lot of discussion about Erby Self who I believe is Levi's son but some other researchers think he belongs to Eli Self (who is possibly twin brother to Levi). I have collected a lot of circumstantial evidence to support my theory but there are those who will not be convinced. One of Erby's descendants and I are still trying to find absolute proof but so far no luck. Levi's War of 1812 pension papers include of lot of valuable info about all his wives and many other things but nothing about his children - unfortunately!
