About Lewis Kemp Bitner

Lewis K. Bitner, 88, of 12005 Koons Road, Waynesboro, died at 9:20 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, in Waynesboro Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past year. He served with the United States Army during World War II in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters. Mr. Bitner worked at the former Leonard Fry Stone Quarry in Zuiiinger and most recently was a superintendent at Martin Marietta Stone Quarry in Pinesburg, Md. He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle and the men's Bible class and served as treasurer of the Sunday School. Mr. Bitner was a member of Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373 of Greencastle and a member of the national AARP. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. In addition to his Wife, he is survived by one daughter, Emma L. Berger of Waynesboro; two sons, Robert L. Bitner of Greenviile, N.C., and Roger W. Bitner of Greencastle; one brother, Arthur Bitner of Waynesboro; six grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Walter "Pat" Bitner, and three sisters, Julia Green, Anna Jumper and Leah "Peg" Swisher. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Evangelical Lutheran Church, 130 N. Washington St., Greencastle, with the Revs. Martin H. Horn, Donald Bohn and Joseph Baer officiating. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, with military graveside honors by Chambersburg VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, and one hour prior to services Friday in the church.
