Lewis Dunham was likely the adopted son of Thomas Gage Dunham according to Greg Stott. Russel Dunham has speculated that Lewis might actually have been a son of Thomas Dunham (1763-1850) and his second wife, Betsy Lewis, because of the name Lewis, and the fact that he was born in 1822.
Perhaps he was illegitimate and farmed out to his half-brother, Thomas Gage Dunham
