Born in Virginia, Benjamin Lawrence married Rachel Weems March 5, 1783 in South Carolina & served as a Lieutenant of the South Carolina Mounted Militia in the Revolutionary War. He & his wife both recorded wills in what is now Pickens County, South Carolina. His wife Rachel Weems Lawrence was granted a widow's pension after his death (Lawrence, Benjamin SC W21547). Benjamin Lawrence is buried on the land that was granted him by the U.S. government for his Revolutionary War service which is now located in the Clemson Experimental Forest, 2 1/2 miles north of Clemson. A memorial stone was placed at his grave at a ceremony in 1962.
