Lily Kallen was educated in private school in Vienna, Austria. She is a survivor of the Holocaust. During the war, as a prisoner in Theresienstadt Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia, she helped safeguard and protect children in the camp. This deep concern and love for children continued through her life. Her journey took her to Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland, and laterto Oederan in Saxony, Germany, where she was placed in forced labor. It was there, as World War II was coming to an end, that she first heard of radio, gleaning bits of English and Russian as the allies were nearing. She was then transported back to Theresien- stadt Concentration Camp, where she was liberated by the Russian Army. From there, she left with her father, David Bass, for a displaced persons camp in Deggendorf, Bavaria, Germany. In May 1946, Lily Kallen finally emigrated to the United States, arriving in Newark, N.J. It was in Newark, N.J., that she met her husband, the late Fred Kallen and became a United States citizen. Throughout her life, Lily Kallen maintained a bright smile, achieving her greatest goals of raising a family, giving generous- ly to others and finally, in her 60s, continuing her education at Rutgers University in Newark, N.J.</p>
