Lionel (51), the owner of two general stores in Mdantsane, East London, in the Eastern Cape was shot dead on Friday 12th April 2002 around 19h00.
"He had just cashed up and locked the doors and walked to his pick-up truck, where some employees were waiting, when a man walked up to him and pressed a pistol to his neck and pulled the trigger, said police spokesperson Stephen Marais.
One of the workers got hold of Moldenhauer's firearm and fired a shot at the man. The man ran away and the workers took the Lionel to his house. There his ex-wife applied first aid to him and then took him to his son-in-law, Hein van Niewenhuizen, a farmer, who rushed Lionel to the hospital. By the time they arrived Lionel has passed away.
The suspect was killed a little while later at another shop about a kilometer from the murder, after he walked into another shop and demanded money after buying cigarettes. When Cedric Futeni, the shop owner, explained that he didn't have any money, the man shot him in the chest and ran away. According to Marais, Futeni was in a stable condition in the Cecilia Makiwane hospital.
