About Liselotte Stern
Liselotte Bendix Stern, the former head Librarian of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, passed away on Monday, (February 19, 2007) at her home at The McAuley, W. Hartford.
Lilo, as she was called, was a scion of the famous C.F.Peters Music publishers, founded in 1800 in Leipzig, the world's foremost publishers of serious music, and the widow of Dr. Max M. Stern, a New York Psychoanalyst. She was born on Oct. 20, 1918, in Berlin, Germany. Her studies were disrupted after the Nazis came to power, and in early 1939 she escaped from Nazi Germany, landing in England, where she worked as a housekeeper during the London Blitz. Both of her parents perished in the holocaust. She arrived in the United States in 1940. She worked as a nurse's assistant in Chicago. Later, in Philadelphia, she received a position as a behavioral science librarian in a psychiatric hospital. In 1960, she moved to New York, becoming the director of the Abraham A. Brill library at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, where she worked until 1970, just before her marriage to Dr. Stern, a member of the institute. A passionate advocate of peace and social justice throughout her life, she worked tirelessly for the homeless, and was an active member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Mrs. Bendix Stern is survived by her niece, Vivian Bendix-Geiler, and her children Gregory and Joanna, as well as her niece Joan Davis of Manchester, England, and her stepdaughter, Hava Kohav Beller, a filmmaker, a step grandson Thomas Beller, a writer, a step great—granddaughter Evangeline Sylvie Beller, 14 days old, and nieces and nephews in England.
