About Lodowick Stanton

Lodowick Stanton was born on 22 May 1749 at Westerly, RI.. He was the son of Col. Joseph Stanton and Mary Champlin. He married Thankful Stanton on 20 August 1772. The Stanton book says he must have had two wives, for tradition among his descendants was his wife's name was Nancy, but John D. Baldwin records him as marrying Thankful, of Stonington, and the records of the Stonington Church also testify that he did.. Lodowick Stanton died after 1822. He was buried at Baptist burying ground, Pittsfield, MA.

Lodowick was an officer in the Colonial Army during the Revolutionary War, and moved to Mass. in 1818 or 1819. He was living in 1822. The family records, silver, etc. belonmging to Lodowick were in the charge of his daughter. Nancy, and were destroyed by fire in New York city in 1836.

1. Lodowick may have had another wife or Thankful was also called "Nancy" because tradition among his descendants says his wife's name was "Nancy". The Stonington Church records only Thankful Stanton as his wife.

2. His daughter Nancy was in possession of the family records and other valuables, e.g., the silver, that were destroyed in a fire in New York City in 1836.
