About Lorentz (Laurens) Merkel
1) - Lorentz Merckel's marriage is recorded in Kingston, Ulster County, New
York churchbook records, per Henry (Hank) Jones, on page 618 of his book
"The Palatine Families of New York, 974.7 D2j."
2) - The following is from "Baptismal & Marriage Registers of the Old Dutch
Church of Kingston, Ulster Co., New York 1660-1809," by R.R. Hoes (1980),
Ft. Worth, TX Library # 974.734R: i.e., Page 35, Lowerens Merkel, j.m., and
Zivilia Catrina Keel, j.d., both born in Hoogduytsland (Germany,) and both
resided under the jurisdiction of Ulters (Ulster) Co., NY; bans registered 22
Mar 1724.
3) - Lowrentz Merckel's name has also been spelled as Louwrens Merkel and
Lorenz Merkel.
4) - The Kingston (NY) Trustees Records mention Lowrens Merkel in Book I,
Part C, pp. 118 and 119.
5) - Lowrens Merkell was a freeholder of Kingston (NY) in 1728, according
to the list of Ulster County Freeholders.
6) - A son, Friederich Merkel, was born 18 April 1741, in Northampton
County, Pennsylvania, so Lorentz and Zivilia Catrina Merckel had moved
from Ulster County, New York sometime in the previous 13 years.
7) - The Burke County (Morgan District), North Carolina, census of 1790
lists Laurenc Marcle as a head of a household which contained 1 white male
over 16, 1 white male over 10 and 3 females. So the family has now
moved from PA to NC.
8) - According to the "Burke County, NC, Land Records, 1779-1790 and
Important Miscellaneous Records 1777-1800," © 1981, Vol. II, by
Huggins (Ft. Worth, TX library ID # Gen. 976.6H), i.e.,
9) - Page 120; Misc Papers, Promissory note, also Bills of Sale 1782-1800;
a) Bond of Elijah Argent of Frederick County, Maryland, 10 Nov.1792 to
Laurence Miracle of North Carolina, John Kearsly, James Lane;
assigned by Lorrance Mareckill on 9 Dec (1792) to Jacob Settlemirer,
Sam'l Duncan. Assigned by Settlemire to Mrs. Elijah Sargent.
10) - Children:
