Lot was the son of Patriarch Abraham's youngest brother Haran. When Haran died prematurely ("in the life of his father"), it was Abraham that raised Lot.

It is written that when Abraham argued with G-d to save the sinful cities for the sake of even ten righteous persons, Whilst fleeing Sodom Lot's wife was "turned into a pillar of salt", as she turned to look back at Sodom. .
