About Louis Bevier

Louis Bevier was French Huguenot. He was in France between 1646 and 1648 where as a Huguenot he was persecuted and so then went to the Palitinate in Germany in 1654. After several years he and his wife Marie undertook the difficult journey across the ocean to a new country. The English had now replaced the Dutch as rulers of the New York area. With a small group of other Huguenots the Beviers obtained permission to found their own city. They named it New Paltz in honor of their sanctuary in the Palatinate. He was one of 12 patentees granted 144 sq. miles of land in New Paltz, NY in 1677. There they built stone houses, several of which are still standing today -- the oldest stone houses in the United States. The Bevier house is one of them.
