Excerpt from Turton Centennial Book: "Louis Exerie Barrie, first child of Joseph and Milina Barrie was born on Jan. 21,1883 at St. George, Illinois. He was baptised at St. George, Illinois on the 21st of January, 1883 with sponsors being Jacob Lagesse and Aurelie Surprenant, grandparents. During this time there was the westward movement for pioneering and homesteading. In compliance with the Homestead Act, his father Joseph had come to Dakota Territory in 1882 and set claim to some land, upon which to build a home and cultivate the soil. In March 1883 the family came to Ashton by train. They had an immigrant car in which they brought furniture, a team of horses, some cattle and machinery so as to break up the homestead land and farm. Exerie grew up as a happy child living on the farm, with the addition of six more brothers and one sister. Being the oldest, Exerie had to help, he walked many a mile behind the plow. He went to school a few years in the country and walked a mile across the pasture carrying a dinner pail. He has told about certain times when a wolf would follow him home from school; if he had any rolled up pancakes left in his dinner pail, which was mainly his menu, he would throw it out to the wolf and then run fast towards home. Exerie kept busy on the farm, he did all the necessary chores. He used to take milk into the creamery at Turton. At that time the railroad was being built through Turton and he lived to see this samerailroad torn up and taken out of Turton. Now as Exerie began to notice the young ladies of the community, he had eyes for a certain French gal named Agnes Fortin. He had a pair of sorrel horses named Dick and Dewey he drove on a fancy buggy and with this he did courting go. Now as Exerie became more and more interested in Agnes, he knew he had to find a home so they could venture on their future life. He purchased land adjoining his father’s from Charles Mannie, who had homesteaded there and built a small house. Soon wedding bells rang on Feb. 6,1907. After their marriage they moved into the farm that Exerie had purchased from Charlie Mannie. In a few years they remodeled their home and added a room to the north and east side."-
