About Louis Asbury Hendry

Louis Asbury Hendry, born April 19, 1856, in Ft. Meade. He moved to Ft. Myers with his family and married Ella Hester Frierson, sister of Julia. She died Aug. 1, 1904, after which he married Mary W.Apthorp.Working for several years with the Hendry cattle ranches, he studied law and became a leading attorney in the local courts, the Florida Supreme Court and the federal courts. He bought the Henddry home in Ft. Myers from his parents in 1889, enlarged it and converted it to the Hendry Hotel which he sold it in 1897. The Royal Palm Hotel stood on the site on First Street for many years.He was mayor of Ft. Myers for six terms. He served several terms for Lee County in the Florida House.He died from an accidental gunshot wound while hunting Dec. 31, 1928, and was buried in the Frierson-Hendry Cemetery. Ten children of his two marriages.
