As a young man, he suffered several attacks of appendicitis. He was sent to Gem City Business College of Quincy, Illinois in June of 1906. In late 1910, Louis set out for Florida. He settled for a time in Dinsmore (now a part of Jacksonville). When he returned to Kansas, he took a course in auctioneering, thereby becoming known as "Colonel" a traditional nickname for auctioneers.
He married Myrtle Blankenship in February of 1914, and farmed. They had two children. He sold his farm in 1920. He and his family moved to Missouri sometime afterwards and were living there during the 1930 & 1940 censuses. A city directory shows him retired and living in Leavenworth, Kansas, by 1963.
