About Lt. Col. Alfred Theophilus Smith
Led the 8th infantry in the aftermath of Wounded Knee (the 8th US Inf. was in charge of collecting the frozen dead of mostly unarmed Native Americans that had been unceremoniously mowed down by other units. (see projects)

"An 1860 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he served during the Civil War first as a Captain in the 8th United States Regular Infantry before being commissioned as Colonel and commander of the 156th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He ended the war with brevets of Major and Lieutenant Colonel in the Regular Service."
"After the war he served as Colonel of the 13th United States Infantry, and was promoted to Brigadier General in the Retired List."
