

Born in Louisa County, Virginia, to Samuel Atwell Guy and Amanda M. Guy . He moved with his family to Goochland County, Virginia, where they lived at "Contention." Graduated from Randolph-Macon College and studied law. He was admitted to the bar and began practicing in Goochland County. When the Civil War began, he enlisted in an artillery company. Was captured at the surrender of Fort Donelson, and imprisoned for eight months. Upon his release, he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel and commanded troops below Richmond, Virginia. In 1863, he was elected to represent Fluvanna, Goochland, and Louisa Counties in the Virginia State Senate, and served one term which ended in 1865. After the war, moved to Richmond about 1867 and continued his practice of law. He represented Richmond and Henrico County in the House of Delegates from 1869 to 1871. Married Mary Ranson on October 12,1871, and they had at least five children.
