Before the Antietam Campaign: He was appointed 1st Lieutenant, CSA, on 4 October 1861, and was elected Major 3 May 1862. He was wounded at Malvern Hill, and appointed Lieutenant Colonel 15 August 1862.1

In the Antietam Campaign: It is not certain if he was present on the Maryland Campaign, being absent at least sporadically until April 1863, while recovering. 1 He was probably in command of the Regiment while Colonel Parham commanded the Brigade.

The remainder of the War: He was wounded again May 6, 1864 at the Wilderness; absent recovering until September.1,2 He was in command and still Lt. Colonel at Appomattox in 1865.2

After the War: He was later a builder and purchasing agent for the Southern Railway Company. He was President of VMI Board of Visitors from 1882-1884.1
