About Lt.-Col. Robert Edward Colborne Jarvis

Robert Edward Colborne Jarvis was born March 4, 1842 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and died there on March 4, 1903--his 61st birthday.

A Lieutenant Colonel in the 67th Leinster Regiment, he was attached to the Staff College at Sandhurst. He served with the Red Cross Ambulance Corps throughout the Franco-Prussian War, and was awarded by the French government, in recognition of his services at that time, one of only two gold crosses made. He was also in Lord Robert’s staff throughout the Afghan War and took part in the celebrated but catastrophic march through the Khyber Pass.

He died unmarried.

Baptised Robert Edward COLBORNE Jarvis, he was the youngest son of Lieutenant Colonel William Botsford Jarvis and Mary Boyles Powell Jarvis, his wife.

Colborne was schooled at Upper Canada College and joined the British Army in 1859. He was a member of the 100th Royal Canadian Regiment, served in the 67th Leinster Regiment, and later switched to the 69th Hampshire Regiment, from which he retired in 1882. His most senior commission was Lieutenant Colonel.
