About Lt. Daniel Gates

Stephen Gates of Hingham, Lancaster and Cambridge, Mass., and Some of His Descendants by the late Clarence Almon Torrey, Ph.B.

Daniel Gates was born in Stow, MA, 25 April 1685; died there 22 March 1759 (gravestone).

He married about 1714, Anna, who died in Stow 9 Aug. 1759, in her 75th year (gravestone).

Daniel lived on a farm at Sprindle Hill, Stow, MA, which was part of the farm owned by his father. By a deed, made 25 March 1741 and recorded 20 May 1757, he conveyed the farm to his son, Silas.

He served as selectman in 1724, 1739, 1747, 1751 and 1752; also served on town committees and as tithingman and fence viewer.

Paul (twin), b. 10 July 1718

Silas (twin), b. 10 July 1718

Margaret, b. 23 March 1720/1. May have married Samuel Gates, b. in Stow 27 Sept. 1711, son of John and Mary (Bowker) Gates; Samuel's wife, Margaret, died in Stow 2 March 1792, aged 71 years.

Anna, b. 5 July 1722; m. (intention 2 March 1750/1) David Clark

Elizabeth, b. 30 May 1724; d. 16 June 1791; m. (intention 14 Feb. 1746/7) Zechariah Whitman, who was born 18 Nov. 1722 and died 14 Jan. 1793; 15 children (Charles H. Farnam, "History of the Descendants of John Whitman of Weymouth, Mass." (1889), p. 69-70).
