Key information came from Joseph Lyon Miller, M.D.: Lieut. John Henderson of Greenbrier County, Virginia, 1650-1900, page 7-8. These points tie the three brothers in Virginia to the Fordell Hendersons:

  • 1. The record (1707 book in his possession of records of James Henderson 1740) mentions Henderson Gent. of Fifeshire, Scotland, and it is known that all the Fifeshire Hendersons are those of Fordell Manor.
  • 2. The 1707 book says that the brothers were grandsons of John Henderson, Gent., Fifeshire.
  • 3. The 1707 book shows John was in Virginia in 1740.
  • 4. On the back of a family paper "is a crudely drawn shield bearing devices that have been identified as identical with those of the Hendersons of Fordell, and also the motto 'Sola Virtus Nobilitat.'"
  • 5. Similarity of names of Fordell Hendersons given in Burke with the Augusta County Hendersons.
  • 6. The Arms, Crest, and Motto listed in Burke for the Fordell Hendersons and that for James Henderson 1740 of Augusta County, Virginia, as listed in Croziers, are the same.

From Bushman Source through Larry Gosnell:

  • 1. James Henderson had two children baptized at Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church (see baptismal lists) by Rev. John Craig:
    • Jean in 1747, and
    • Archibald in 1749

  • 7. DB 13, page 74/75, 23 Aug. 1766, William and Isabella Brown to James Henderson, 400 acres of land to James Henderson, land patented by William Brown in 1741. (This land is the North River area of Augusta County.)
