Shuart was prepared for college at Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut and entered Williams College in the Class of 1918. In February, 1917, he joined the first naval unit organized from a college for war service and later was assigned to the U.S. Cruiser "Chester." He was on that ship for seventeen months' continual overseas service, during the World War, attaining the rank of ensign, and later was appointed junior lieutenant in the Naval Reserve. He was relieved from service in the spring of 1919. In 1921 he was secretary of the Springfield Glazed Paper Company.
He married on April 30, 1917, Harriet Dickinson, daughter of Henry and Stella (Paige) Dickinson of Springfield, and they are the parents of two children, John Denton, born on April 29, 1918 and Barbara Phillips, born on June 26, 1920.
