On February 8, 1813, during the war with England, Congress passed an act authorizing the borrowing of $16,000,000 ; Robert's name is among the list of patriotic citizens, in that emergency, subscribing $10,000; John Rathbone and his son John Jr also subscribed $20,000. Robert was one o f the founders and the first President of the Fulton Bank o f New York City, organized in 1824; he was prominent among the old merchants of New York City, and was senior member of the firm of Chesebrough & Van Alen, importers, New York City.
