About Lucille Madsen

On October 31, 1900, Lucile Ballard was born in Logan, Cache County, Utah.
She was the first daughter born to the union of Elder Melvin J. Ballard of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles and Martha Jones Ballard.Lucile received her earliest schooling in Logan and attended schools in Portland throughout her high school years. In 1918, she moved to Salt Lake City to attend the University of Utah. An avid reader and scripture and gospel principles scholar, Lucile actively engaged in study throughout her life.
It was in Portland where this girl of eight quickly learned personal church service. A gifted pianist, Lucile became the accompanist for all church services and it was her privilege to accompany her Father as he bore his testimony with his beautiful and rich baritone voice. She would travel with him to accompany him and in doing so she would hear him bear his testimony and teach gospel principles.
Lucile and Richard William Madsen, Jr. were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 17, 1920. They were the parents of five children to whom she was a devoted mother: Richard William Madsen, III, Mary Lucile Madsen Ellsworth (Mrs. Homer S. Ellsworth), Patricia Madsen, Gloria Joyce Madsen Hulme, and Donna Isabel Madsen (Mrs. Duncan J. Williamson). They were the grandparents of 27 grandchildren.
Lucile had an unwavering testimony of the gospel. She loved classical music, fine literature, and gardening. Early in their lives, she exposed her children to the things she loved dearly.
Devoted to her family, church, and to the welfare of her community, Lucile served as President of numerous PTA's and in many civic organizations. She served in every organization of the church on stake and ward levels. She gave her greatest church service in the Relief Society where she served as Stake President in 1939, Mission President in 1945, Ward President in 1953, taught social studies and, for over 25 years, spiritual living. She was a gifted teacher and she delighted in teaching. Numerous Relief Society members have testified to their appreciation of her knowledge and understanding, her testimony and faith.
Lucile was, also, talented in business. Having perceptive investment and business judgment, she served as Vice President and as a Director of the Sterling Furniture Company from its inception.
As an expression of her devotion to her great father, Lucile established the Melvin J. Ballard Memorial Missionary Fund for the benefit of missionary efforts worldwide. It would please her very much if you made a contribution to this fund (A/C # 242100592 c/o Deseret Trust Company, P.O. Box 11558, Salt Lake City, UT 84147).
