About Lucy Catherine McCrary

FAYETTE GAZETTE, FAYETTE MISSOURI, MARCH 1888 -- LUCY CATHERINE MCCRARY HACKLEY -- Died, March 21, 1888, at the home of her son, Boyd G. Hackley, aged 73 years, 11 months and 6 days. Deceased came with her father and mother, Benjamin McCrary and Mary "Polly" Coleman, from Tennessee to Missouri at a very early day. She married William Hackley and survived him nearly a quarter of a century. She was the mother of 13 children, of whom nine are yet living. At an early age, she united with the regular Baptist Church at Boonesboro, Howard County, Missouri, and at the time of her death her membership was at Rock Spring Church.

She enjoyed nothing better than the services of the sanctuary; unless, indeed, it was that homely and unostentatious charity for which she was justly noted. In time of distress or sickness in her neighborhood she was always present, and by her kind and cheerful instructions endeavoring to alleviate suffering and sorrow.

But alas, the time came to her as it must to all, when she who so often had ministered to others kind words and loving deeds, came to need them herself. But He in whom she trusted verified His promise that they who put their trust in Him should never be desolate. Her son, Boyd, gave her every attention that could be bestowed on her; and his wife, Sudie, with the devotion and tenderness of a true daughter, ministered to her to the end. Loving friends and neighbors, too, vied with each other in their attentions; but all in vain. The Master called her to "come up higher" and unterrified by the dark-rolling billows of death, she obeyed the summons.

While the church has lost a faithful member, her children a kind and affectionate mother, and humanity a true friend, the loved ones who preceded her to the Heavenly Canaan have clasped her in their warm embrace and God has wiped all the tears from her eyes.

Passed Through the sunset gateway, To that city paved with gold; Passed into the new life's gladness, To be no longer old.
