Lucy was a Catawba/Cherokee woman. She lived in a place called Chunannee Creekin the Smokey Mountains of North Georgia near the town of Helen. She did not want to go West in 1817 and her name is on the ResevationRoll. She lived on 640 acre reservation "#91" that was granted to her bythe Turkey Town Treaty of 1817. In 1826, after gold was discovered alongDukes Creek on her property, her home was taken from her by the laws ofthe land at that time. Indians were considered savages if not of theCaucasian race, thus on census reports, many hid the very fact that theywere Indian. Some say this is where we get the saying "Black Dutch".Many claiming to be "Black Dutch" were really full blood or of mixedIndian heritage.
