Luke Donn Fleurs (2000 – 2024)

Brief overview:

Luke (24), a South African professional soccer player who played as a centre back for the SA Premier Division side, Kaizer Chiefs, was shot dead on Wednesday 3rd April 2024 at around 20h00 in a hijacking in Honeydew. He was filling up with fuel at a petrol station on 14th Avenue, on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter when he was confronted by two armed males who were driving a white BMW 1 Series. They pointed a firearm at him and pulled Luke out of his car and shot him once in the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car, followed by his accomplice. He taken to the nearest medical centre where he was certified deceased on arrival.

Police have launched a manhunt for the two perpetrators. Gauteng police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo said the provincial police commissioner, Lt-Gen Tommy Mthombeni has appointed a team of seasoned detectives from the provincial office to investigate and search for the suspects.

They are charged with murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms, possession of ammunition and defeating the ends of justice.

Fleurs joined Chiefs in October last year after previously playing for SuperSport United. After weeks training with the Amakhosi, Fleurs penned a two-year deal with an option to renew at the end of his contract with the Phefeni Glamour Boys.

Fleurs previously played for the national under-23 side, representing South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics.
