About Luke Williams

(Courtesy of researcher, Glidie Mobley) Luke's will was written 02/09/1810 and admitted to probate 03/26/1810 in Halifax County, Virginia. It is recorded in Will Book 8, pages 261-262, Halifax County, Va.

In the name of God, Amen. I, Luke Williams, being sick of body tho sound of sence and memory, I give and bequeath my body to the dust and my soul to God that gave it. After all my just debts are paid-Item-I give and bequeath to my son William Williams, my negro man named Jack, and to his son Luke Williams, my horse, bridle and saddle. Item-I give and bequeath to Edmund Irby and my daughter Caty Williams one negro woman named Lucy also to my daughter Caty Williams one feather bed and furniture and all my wearing clothes. Item-I give and bequeath to my daughter Betsy Twidwell (Tweedwell) one feather bed and furniture and one half dozen pewter plates, one pewter dish. Item-I give and bequeath to my son Zachariah Williams my still and give all the rest of my estate to be equally divided between William Williams, William Irby, John Chapman, Edmund Irby, Caty Williams, Luke Williams and Betsy Tweedwell also I appoint Zachariah Williams my hole (sic) and sole executor of this my last will and testament this ninth day of Feb 1810. Herewith I fixed my hand and seal in the presents of William Sydnor; Charles Womack; Luke Williams

At a court held for Halifax County the 26th day of Mar 1810 the within written last will and testament of Luke Williams deceased was exhibited in court and proved by the oaths of

three witnesses there subscribed and ordered to be recorded and on motion of Zachariah Williams, the executor therein named who made oath that according to law certificate is

granted to him for obtaining probate in the form, he giving surety whereupon he, together with John Jones and William Irby, his securities entered will and aknowledged their bond

in penalty of five thousand dollars, conditioned according to law.
