About Luther "John" Eastman

John Eastman Memorial

Birth: 1779 Death: Oct. 17, 1871 Cleveland Cuyahoga County Ohio, USA

Although the Cleveland Cemetery Interment Records list him as John Eastman, he may actually be Luther Eastman, born April 2, 1779 in Rupert, Bennington, VT to Cyprian and Rosanna (Nelson) Eastman. Cyprian died in 1798 and Rosanna then married Veris Miller in 1799 in Bristol, Vermont. This Luther Eastman married Lydia Eastman, a cousin in Bristol, Vermont on 19 Apr 1800. In 1810 Luther lived in Bristol. In 1820 Luther was recorded in Bristol and his mother Rosanna now Miller was the name below him. Luther's mother died in 1835. Luther is next found in 1840 in Medina County, Ohio. Lydia died sometime before October 1857 when Luther married Sarah Johnson in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Luther and Sarah were living in Cleveland in 1860. In 1870 Luther, birth 1779 in Vermont, was living with the family of his son, Luther N Eastman. Luther died in 1871.

This is where it gets difficult to conclude this is Luther, as there are three different records. The first was for a Luther Eastman, died Oct 16, age 82 years and 6 months, widower, residence Lorain St, parents Luther and Jane Eastman. The second is for John Eastman, age 92, 8 months and 23 days, residence Lorain St. The third is a Cleveland interment record which shows John Eastman, age 92 of Lorain Street being interred on Oct 17 in Sec H East half of Lot 16. All three records agree that the deceased was a resident of Lorain Street. They disagree as to age and first name. A records search for a John Eastman living in Cleveland give no results before 1900. Although the 1770 census gives no street address the 1880 census does and son Luther N was living on Lorain St. The death record for Luther N gives parents as Luther and Lois (close to Lydia) and burial is in the same section as father Luther/John.
