Source:FamilyTreeMaker entry: III Reuben Allen III (b.3-28-1748, 1779) Source: FoldThree
Reuben Allen was not reared in the Quaker faith. His mother Ingaborg, a non-Quaker had married John Skeen when Allen was a boy. His father had died when Reuben was about three years old. Reuben Allen III was a well educated, wealthy man. In 1768-69 he married his first cousin Lydia Moore. Lydia was dismissed from the Quakers for mcd September 3, 1770. Not only had she married a non-Quaker, she married her first cousin contrary to Quaker Discipline.
In the American Revolution, Reuben Allen III was one of the 67 Virginians who served on the Commander in Chief's Guard. He was wounded and furloughed circa 1779. He died of received wounds while at home, leaving his widow with five children under ten years old. She did not re-marry for a great many years after his death. (She married Joseph Hawkins 1797.)
