About Lydia Knowlton

Lydia GRIFFIN was born 21 Jun 1664 in Haverhill. Married 1) March 21, 1684, to Martin Ford 2) William Knowlton.

Mathew/Martin's death occurred between 1694-1697 but was not recorded in Massachusetts vital records and at this time(2001) it is unknown where he was buried.

Lydia was left with young children and remarried about 1697 to a William Knowlton. His Knowlton family has had a very extensively researched book written about their ancestry in which Lydia and William are mentioned. William was a cordwainer in Ipswich, Mass. for a time. William then moved to Wenham, Mass. where he had been granted land March 1 1678. In Wenham he was elected to Sealer of the Leather for the town in 1692. His first wife died in 1694 and there is no record of children from that marriage. William was a soldier in King Phillips War in the Narrgansette Expendition 1675-76.(From email of Yvette Seldin on July 23, 2001-descended through James Harvey Ford).

(More information from same source) On Jan 30 1698 at the town meeting, it was agreed that Goodwife Knowlton take care of Goodwife Hobbs, the widow had become ill at their house. Lydia received 2 shillings per week for 2 weeks while the widow recovered. Lydia gave birth to their only child, William, on March , 1706 in Wenham. Her husband, William, died in Wenham on March 15, 1706 in Wenham. Their son, William, died in Wenham on March 16, 1718 at the age of 12. Lydia died in 1760 at the old age of 96 and it is not known where she is buried.
