About Lydia Rider

Lydia Tilden

  • b. Taunton, Ma Apr 26 1658 [MD(11:183), quoting "Ante, II:7"]
  • d. Sept 17 1740
  • dau of Thomas & Elizabeth (Bourne)(Waterman) Warren.
  • Dau-in-law of Samuel-2 Rider who m. Sarah Bartlett

Inscription: wife of Sam, 83 years

Some say this is the 2nd wife of Samuel-2. However, the "proofs" offered in the "Mayflower Descendant" are weak and lack definitive relationships.

Mother of the Joseph Rider who m. Abigail (Warren), 4th in the line from Richard Warren of the "Mayflower".

  • Sam'l Rider Jr & Sarah Bartlett
  • Robert Bartlett & Mary Warren

RESIDENCE:

1680: Plymouth Colony [Col.M.B.B.-Plymouth Colony Vital Records of Marriages, Births, & Burials printed in MD 22:92-3]

NOTE - NOTE - NOTE: The Samuel Rider that Lydia married MAY be the Samuel who was born 1657, son of Sarah (Bartlett) OR, she MAY be the 2nd wife of his father (who m. Sarah).

The "experts" have some disagreement. The "proof" offered in MD 11:182 is simply,

 (1) that when Lydia was admitted to the First Church of Plymouth in 1692, she was refered to as, "Lydia (second) wife of Samuel Rider". Samuel III b. 1657 would have been AE 23, when Lydia m. and could have had a prev. wife; but it does not seem likely.
 (2) Samuel Rider's will of 1714 lists Lydia's children (including Mary) plus a "John" and a "Mercy" to whom he "bequeathed nothing ... as followeth ... John ... and my Daughter Mercy I have done Competently for them in my life time." As none of his sons m. a Mercy, except possibly William - the name of whose wife is lost, and he specifically mentions him, "to my son William Rider ... my Sixty acre lott at or near a place called moreys holes..."; we can safely say Mercy is not a daughter-in-law; thus, Mr. Bowman says, she must be a daughter by a previous wife who must be Sarah (Bartlett). BUT, although we KNOW (above) that he had a previous wife; there is NO EVIDENCE that it was Sarah Bartlett -- OR, that it was NOT.

NOTE: eldest daughter, Hannah was born two weeks before his m. to Lydia (Tilden) - could his 1st wife have been her elder sister who d.in childbirth???

 (3) Sarah (Bartlett) Rider DID have a son named John who m. twice and left many children [RFA][MD 11:184]; but, "the only reference to [Mercy] yet [1909] found on the records is in her father's will" [MD 11:184].
Nor is there any record of an additional John who appears to be the nephew of Sarah (Bartlett) Rider's son John -

- yet, Samuel's son John was clearly extablished as an adult at his father's decease; making it clear(?) that his father, Samuel II, was the father of Lydia's children AND THUS, the husband of Sarah Bartlett - but is this proof? AND what happened to Sarah Bartlett?

 - her church record show Lydia was the second wife of a Sam'l Rider; but, what is the proof that Sarah was THE first wife of THAT Sam'l and not his mother?

If Lydia is wife of elder Samuel b.1632, WHY are they buried in different cemeteries??? There is no evidence of a gs for Sarah Bartlett or the Samuel b.1657 at either location.

Lydia's husband lived Manomet per deed executed by her grson Ezekiel, shouldn't he be buried there vs. Plymouth where Sam(2) is buried? - implication - Lydia m. Sam(3) and his gs no longer exists.

If Lydia m. Sam(3), why is her son, Sam, always refered to as "Jr" vs. "3d" when both Sam(2) & Sam(3) would have yet been alive.

If Samuel, husband of Lydia, is not the son of Sarah (Bartlett) but her widower, none of Lydia's descendants are descended from Richard Warren of the Mayflower through Sarah Bartlett, dau. of Mary Warren. AND it is through HER SON WILLIAM that the Rider's Mills, NY and Pittsfield, Mass. line descends.

I leave it to you to decide. For some references on the theory that Sarah & Lydia m. the same man, see: Mayflower Descendant(MD) 1:210-11; 2:179; 11:49-55,63,171,182-7; 14:235; 15:26,243-4; 16:85; 17:72; 22:93 [FR]says, "see also: Savage 3:540, 4:301; Shurtleff 1:41; Waterman 1:620; key to abbrev. colored pages of Vol.I"
