    • Mthethowakhe Zuma Nzama (26), pleaded not guilty to the crimes. A prisoner who was handed a life sentence and 15 years' jail for the same crimes, Frans Khemisa (27), told the court that Nzama had been in the gang. He also said another gang member, Nico Zikhali, was the gunman. Nzama was still at large when Khemisa stood trial.
    • On 28th February 2008, "Bereaved mother Aileen Stephens told the Pietermaritzburg High Court that her son, Lyle Stephens (28), was shot while taking food to an orphanage in a needy area near Hillcrest. Mthethowakhe Nzama (26), was convicted of the murder and aggravated robbery of Stephens. He was jailed for life for the murder and 15 years for the robbery. Judge Ron McLaren said the murder and robbery were motivated by greed. While Nzama did not have the direct intention to kill he had a reckless disregard for the lives of others."
