Lyman W. Colby, who was one of Manchester's best-known and most prolific photographers. Lyman was born 27 February 1846 in Dunbarton, New Hampshire (NH), the son of farmer Nathaniel Colby (1798-1872) and Hepisbeth Woodbury (1804-1874); Layman was one of at least six children born to the couple. When Lyman began his photography career is unknown, but he was listed in an 1866 Manchester, NH directory as a photographer. Circa 1870 he married Anna R. Stearns, born circa 1846; the couple apparently did not have children. Lyman would remain in Manchester the remainder of his life, operating a photographic studio, and also serving in the state legislature at the point. He died suddenly of a heart attack in the Concern, NH railroad station on 21 June 1900. Locations of his studios in Manchester, from directories, are as follows:
