About MSgt. Alfred A. Gruenke
Alfred was the youngest of five children born to Anton Joseph & Agnes (Hofmann) Gruenke. His birth mother died (1917) & his father second married Frances K. Kalla in 1919; this union gave Albert eight additional half-siblings.
Alfred enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1939; in 1940 he was a private assigned to Second Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Forces in San Diego. He retired in 1953 after serving 24 years -- achieving the rank of Master Sergeant [E-8] & being awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for exemplary service.
Alfred died on 29 October 1963 -- his 48th birthday, in Los Angeles County, California.
