Mabel Ann Cheville Atkinson BIRTH 16 Feb 1892 Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, USA DEATH 11 Jun 1983 Ames, Story County, Iowa, USA BURIAL Collins Cemetery Collins, Story County, Iowa, USA MEMORIAL ID 28643722 MEMORIAL PHOTOS 2 FLOWERS 5 Sidney and Mabel were surprised with a celebration by their hometown when they married in 1910 on the 4th of July. They went to clerks office for the license and they were told no one was there to perform the ceremony, they would have to go to the Nevada city park platform. After some thought and deliberation they decided it didn't matter where they were married so they went to the city park. There they found the mayor and city officials, along with thousands of citizens to witness the marriage. Justice Knudsen performed the ceremony. Merchants gave many prizes. When Sidney and Mable left in the spring wagon, it was loaded with towels, table linens, granite ware, tinware, soap, groceries, breakfast foods, notions and many other articles, along with a a handsome $50 bedroom suite they will bring home on another trip.
They made their first home on a farm a mile east of Maxwell, IA. It appears that the parents of the bride did not take kindly to the public wedding indulged in by their daughter and they have since refused to have anything to do with her, but the couple are confident and so are their many fiends and the thousands who witnessed the ceremony that all will be well ere long and the parents will forgive the young people for what they may consider a foolish act.
Mr. And Mrs. Atkinson will recieve the hearty congratulations of the thousands of people of Story county who witnessed the ceremony.
Indeed, Sidney and Mabel had a long and happy marriage of 40 years. She worked at Mary Greeley Hospital for many years, and also cooked at the Adelante fraternity of Iowa State University for several years.
She died Saturday at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Collins and had been a resident of the North Grand Care Center for the past 2-1/2 years.
