Mabel Jane Fisk

Mabel Jane Fisk died the day after giving birth to a child conceived from being raped by Michael Wood at her father’s home. She was aged 14/15 years old.

Sadly, her mother Rebecca had died in childbirth herself the year before. Following Rebecca’s death, father Thomas had little choice but to leave Mabel in charge of the home and the younger siblings when he went off to work. This left Mabel vulnerable to the predatory advances of Wood. Tragically, her younger brother, also Thomas, died from accidental injury earlier in 1893 (a fall on a tree stump resulting in a catastrophic stomach haemorrhage) whilst father was away working and he was in the care of the older siblings.
