Mabel was born at home on February 4, 1923 at 456 Center Street (later known as Armitage) in Chicago.
Mabel Shlemon was named after Mabel Scholz, a church friend of Suria's who modeled for Marshall Fields. In the 1920 and 1930 Census there is a Mabel Scholz listed with her parents and siblings living at 2627 Sunnyside Ave in Chicago and her occupation is listed as a clothing model. From family photos and videos Mabel Scholz later moved to Wisconsin where Mabel Shlemon visited her and she also attended the wedding of Mabel Shlemon to John Rizzo in 1948. Mabel Scholz married a man named Bob and was connected to Scholz Florist (her fathers?) and it is believed Mabel Scholz' parents divorced. This is possible the Mabel Scholz that Mabel Rizzo is named after: Mabel Peterson
Growing up, she attended John M. Palmer Elementary School, a new school (Officially opened in September 1926 according to www.palmerpride.org).
As an adult she worked at Hammond Organ. She met her husband John Rizzo while working there when he was delivering Coke there. Mabel also later worked at her husband John's tile store.
John and Mabel married on January 10, 1948 and according to photos, their wedding party consisted of:
John and Mabel first lived together upstairs in an apartment of 4973 Kolmar, the home where Mabel had grown up and had been living with her parents and brother.
Shortly after being married, John and Mabel moved to 9922 N. Karlov in Skokie, Illinois where they raised their daughter Private. John and Mabel lived there until some time after Mabel's step-mother Penna Shlemon passed away.
In 1984, with Mabel's father John Shlemon in his mid 80s and living alone, John and Mabel moved into Mabel's father's home at 8305 Gross Point Rd in Morton Grove, Illinois. This home was also only about a half mile from John and Mabel's daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons where they visited often and became just a short walk away from.
In about 1987, John and Mabel moved to a condo at 9370 Hamilton Court in Des Plaines, Illinois where she lived until moving in to an assisted living home in August 2002, followed by a different home in Skokie, Illinois.
Mabel died on December 4, 2004 in Skokie, Illinois. She was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois next to her husband in a family lot with her parents on the opposite side of the gravestone.
