About Mads Peter Johnson

PIONEER OF OLD PINERY ERA DIES

Mads Peter Johnson, 86, one of the few remaining pioneer settlers of Wood county, died at Riverview hospital on Wednesday, July 12, at 10:05 p.m. Death was attributed to old age complications. He en- tered the hospital on July 4. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Saratoga Union church with the Rev. J. W. Schwager of- ficiating. Burial follows in the Pioneer cemetery in the town of Saratoga. Mr. Johnson was born at Stege, Denmark, on the Isle of Moen, on February 6, 1858, the son of John Peter and Mette (Hansen) Madsen. He came to America with his par- ents at the age of 11, the family settling first near Natwick's Mill in the town of Hansen, Wood coun- ty, and a year later moving to the old homestead in the town of Saratoga. --Wed Here in 1878-- On September 7, 1878, in the town of Grand Rapids, he was married to Miss Alice Knuteson, who preceded him in death on September 10, 1940. Six children were born to this union, one dying in in- fancy... For over 50 years the Johnsons resided at the old homestead in the town of Saratoga, where they cele- brated their golden wedding in 1928. Ten years later they cele- brated their 60th anniversary. Af- ter leaving the farm they lived with their son T. J. Johnson on Eighth street south and later at Lake Wazeecha, where Mr. Johnson made his home for the past 22 years. He served many years as a sup- ervisor of the town of Saratoga, and as a school officer, and was largely instrumental in the build- ing of the Saratoga Union church. --Pioneer in the Wilds-- With his passing, Wood county loses one of those early pioneers who literally carved themselves a home in the wilderness. Mr. John- son came here when this section of the country was a wilderness roam- ed by Indians. A few log houses marked the site of the present city of Wisconsin Rapids, and this section was known as the "Pinery", logs being rafted down the Wiscon- sin river... excerpt from Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune; Thursday, July 14, 1944
