Mae Michell McLean (1983 - 1999)
Brief overview:
Mae (16), was shot when she was caught in the crossfire, between robbers and security personnel, during a cash-in-transit heist, at the Knowles shopping centre in Pinetown on 9th October 1999.
Mae was outside the supermarket working at a vending stall selling sausages, when six armed men on the back of a pick-up truck opened fire on a security van transporting cash. Mae was hit in the head, and security guard, Roy Mills, who was transporting the cash boxes, was hit in the stomach. Another shopper, Paul Grobler, was wounded. Mae was taken to St Augustine's Hospital where she died shortly afterwards.

- At the beginning of June 2002, Thulani Mbatha (52), and Velaphi Shozi (29), were sentenced to life imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder, by Justice Willem Booysen. They also received two 15-year sentences for the attempted murder of Mills and Grobler. The sentences will run concurrently.
