Biography

Birth

: From the Court record (see below), we know that Magdalena was the daughter of Jacob Verdon and Maria Thomas Badie. In her marriage record<ref name="Marr">"Marriage Book ..." vol.VI, p. 36, 19 March 1645, Adam Brouwer, from Ceúlen, and Magdalena Verdon, from New Netherland.</ref>, she was recorded as a "native" of New Netherland.
: Macy<ref>Macy, “Some New Light on Aeltje Braconie and Maria Bade,” pp. 26-27.</ref> makes a convincing case that Magdalena was born about 1631. Her last child was baptized on 7 May 1678. Any birth date birth prior to 1628 would have made her more than 50 years old at the time of that birth. Her first marriage occurred in April 1645. Because of the extreme shortage of women in the new colony, it is likely that she would have married prior to the typical age of 18, so after 1627. Because her husband, Adam Brouwer, was listed before her brother Thomasin the 1663 petition to the orphan's court (see Court records, below), it is likely that she was the first child. Her father died before November 1634. So Thomas would have been born about 1633 (making him aged about 22 when his only child was baptized), and given the typical two-year spacing, she could have been born about 1631, making her aged 14 at first marriage--young but plausible considering the shortage of eligible brides. For example, two sisters, Maria and Jannetje Rapalje, each married before their 14th birthdays, in 1640 and 1642 respectively.

Marriage ===: According to a near-primary source, Magdalena married Adam Brouwer in New Amsterdam on 19 March 1645.<ref name="Marr"/>

: Secondary sources have some minor disagreements over the precise date of the marriage. Totten <ref>Totten, "Verdon Family Notes," p. 108.</ref> agrees with the Marriage Book, giving a date of 19 March. Hoffman<ref>Hoffman, "Brouwer Beginnings...," p. 194; citing CDNY XIV:70, mentioning the wedding feast on that day.</ref> believes that 19 March was the date that intentions were registered and that the marriage actually occurred on 21 March. He claims that at the marriage feast, on that day, is where Dominie Bogardus first criticized Director-General Kieft. If so, this event marks an intersection of family history with grand history. The feud between Bogardus and Kieft continued until they were recalled to Amsterdam in 1647--both sailing on the same ship. Theissue remained unresolved because the ship sank off the coast of England, killing both of them.<ref>Shorto, pp. 140, 178-179.</ref>

Court records

: Since her father's death, before November 1664, Magdalena's mother, Marie Thomas Badie, had remarried twice--first to Willem Adrianensz Bennet, second to Paulus van der Beeck. On February 8, 1663, Magdalena, via her husband Adam Brouwer, entered into legal action to gain her share of her father's estate. The Minutes of the Orphan Masters of New Amsterdam<ref>Fernow, pp. 229-230.</ref> read as follows: ::Adam Brouwer, Tomas Verdon and Arien Willemsen, all children by previous marriages of the wife of Paulus van de Beecq ... request, whereas up to date they have not received their father's inheritance, that they may have it from Mr. Paulus van de Beecq, who has hitherto retained it. : The court referred the issue to the Director-General. The ultimate result of the action is unclear.

Church membership ===: Adam Brouwer and Magdalena were entered into the initial membership roll of the Reformed Dutch Church in Brooklyn on 12 March 1660.<ref>Hoffman, p. 195.</ref>

Death ===: The date of Magdalena's death is unknown. On 12 August 1689, she conveyed property to her sons and sons-in-law.<ref>Totten, p. 128.</ref> That is the last known record of her life.

Burial ===: The place of her burial is unknown. A Find-A-Grave entry<ref>Find-A-Grave, Magdalena x Brouwer, memorial ID 175807196, https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/175807196/magdalena-x-brouwer .</ref> states "location of grave unknown".
