- Mattie, the only daughter of Jacob & Elizabeth Hertzler, had one brother Levi, single. After Mattie married Joseph, Jacob Hertzler built the Grandpa house on their farm and Mattie and Joseph moved into the large farm house, where they took over the farming. (KyJa p.15) - Journal found in Kanagy papers "Grandmother and I started for Dr Nicholous Hospital Savannah Missouri. Monday Oct. 7 1929 got to St Joseph Tuesday eve 7 oclock and staid at a lodging place. Got here ?alef gst at a restaurant and then started for Savannah Hospital. It was very rainy and damp. Came to the hospital about 10 oclock. They soon examined Grandmother and said they would do for her what they could. Started treatment on Thursday. Cancer came out on Wedsday all but 2 places on the same place she was treated every time. So they started treatment on Started fer home Tues eve quarter of nine at the Hospital. Got to St Joe. Then 9:30 started at St Joe, got to St Louis 7 next morning waited till 9 then started for Huntingdon where we arrived Thu8rsday morning October 31 at 7 oclock. Came to Mothers home about 10 oclock Thursday. Mother was very tired. She staid up with Jonases from Thursday till Monday. Then Lydia Swarey came and staid with her till the next Tuesday eve and on Thursday Lydia Peachey came and took care of Grandmother till she died Which was on Saturday, December 14.
