Mainwaring Hilton was born in 1683. This name is sometimes given as Mannering, or Mannerel. Most of what is known about him is from the Court Notices. Elizabeth Thompson, (daughter of John and Sarah (Emery) Thompson), is responsible for a large segment of those bearing the name of Hilton. Having joined the Church on 23 May 1703, and being about to marry Alexander Gray, she came into court and disclosed the paternity, long shielded, of her two illegitimate children. The two young men involved were Thomas Ball, and Mannerel( Mainwaring) Hilton of York, soon vanquished for all time.
