About Maj. Craig Wheaton-Smith

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2944115/Great-granddaughter-tycoon-Mr-Selfridge-says-wasn-t-womaniser.html:

Wheaton-Smith was arrested for smuggling semen from French Charolais cattle into Britain, which was used to inseminate Ayrshire cows belonging to Lord Beaverbrook and British Agriculture adviser Sandy Copeland. ‘They stored the semen in my grandmother’s fridge which she thought was outrageous,’ Mrs Augur reveals. ‘The resulting calves were exhibited at the Bath and West Show, but my father felt a hand on his shoulder in 1965 and was fined £50 for smuggling.

‘It was an extraordinary story but actually it has changed the dairy industry.’

Craig Wheaton-Smith authored the book, Breeding Better Cows, published by Dairy Farmer Ltd. (Books), 1957, 8vo, 191 pages.

Of particular note was Craig Wheaton-Smith's observations regarding problems associated with using pedigree as a selection tool.

Craig Wheaton-Smith made the following observations in Breeding Better Cows on the miss use of pedigree:

"As things stand the vast majority of our dairy stock are sired by unproven bulls, and quite a few are by bulls proved to be bad (if the proof were fully available) the deficiency of merit being well compensated for by sales technique and management."

"Bulls, then, sold on their pedigrees and widely used before their merits are known, place considerable obstacles in the way of breeding from only the better half of the population."
